Puerto Vallarta (full report!)

My friend Screw and me have been invited by Paco Rosas and Ale (Libelulart) to paint in the streets of Puerto Vallarta, a quite touristic small town on the Pacific coast of Mexico in Jalisco State. Once you walk out of the “Malecón”, the sea front promenade, the city is still very authentic and looks just amazing! So many good spots to paint!
I enjoyed daily delicious sea food tacos and very very hot and humid weather!

Yeah, free to work, no Health and Safety in Vallarta!

Plastic, plastic, plastic… This is very common in Mexico, in street restaurants, to avoid cleaning the (plastic) plates, they sheathed them in plastic bags and then just throw the bag away!!! No more washing dishes, save water by using plastic! Viva la ecología!!! It’s particularly weird to eat in a plastic bag but you get used to it!

On Sunday, we organized an event on the beach front. My Contratistas friend Screw and I improvised an interactive installation with some typical bricks we found around the corner! We were amazed by the result and how the people played with the piece all night long!

So much fun, I’ll be back! Thanks to Ale, Paco, Screw, Doctor, Froilan, Macho, Radio Universidad de Vallarta and BOUDHIE!

While the Autotono is travelling to Monterrey for its next presentation, I took a break on the beach of Puerto Vallarta, invited by Paco Rosas and Libelulart to paint and enjoy the Mexican West coast.

PLAF!

PLAF is over! It is probably the biggest and more interesting illegal project I ever did!
The PLAF Blog is updated now with pictures and videos of the 7 installations we put in the East River.

Thanks a lot to MOMO for the amazing job and Anonymous Gallery for the help.

And a big thanks also to Kym (she is number one in almost everything!), Milton (number one in Piña colada and Greenpoint lifestyle), Mitchell (problems? He has the solution), Aiwey, Victor, Rafa, Marie Lorenz…

I arrived in Monterrey, Mexico, yesterday, more project coming soon.

Broadway Beach Video

The Broadway Beach project was meant to be a single day outing with one raft, a couple paints, and a drill. Using local driftwood, styrofoam, and rope we would create something enormous; visible from the Williamsburg Bridge above us. We painted driftwood for visibility, based on a Maritime aesthetic we’re investigating (think of the colors on fishing bobbers & buoys). Whats left to chance is the way this gathered garbage will move on its own with tide and current. The posibilities reminded us of a certain dime store novelty toy …the one where a loose chain creates a cartoon character’s profile… we tried to recreate/demonstrate this toy in the video.

All the artworks presented at the show are related with the seven outdoor installations we put in New York waterways or, like the prints, are related with the nautical graphic researches we did to find a coherent way to paint the installations.

Three new PLAF videos

Gantry Plaza State Park, Long Island City, NY:

We´ve been working last Monday from 5 am to 6 am to install these five wave/wind/tide balanced pendulums. This is a quick video preview when the high tide reached them (sorry for the audio).

East River Park, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY:

On Thursday afternoon (2 hours before our opening at the Anonymous Gallery!!!) we installed the first part of the Williamsburg Park sculpture then we came back on a very foggy Saturday morning around 7 to install the second part. Here is a video of that foggy morning.

Hallet’s Cove, Astoria, Queens, NY:

On August 28th we installed the first two sculptures of the PLAF project in Queens, in front of the Upper East Side of Manhattan. We worked from 3 am to 7 am (yeah, it took a lot of time, the tide was supposed to be high and it was totally low when we arrived at the spot…)
We went back there yesterday and they still work perfectly, opening and closing each time the tides change.
