Residency
Moulinage de Chirols, France
July 2024
Engraving experiment with rocks and movement made during the Encrages Art Residency in Chirols, France in July 2024.
Courir avec des cailloux (Running with Rocks) is an experiment within a series of explorations around the idea of creating through movement — a concept in which the artist’s body and its turbulences become both a decisive and uncontrolled driving force in the creative process.
A receptive matrix plate is placed at the bottom of a wooden box transformed into a backpack. Various stones of different sizes and weights are placed inside. The box is closed, carried on the artist’s back, and he sets off running for a determined duration. The jolts of the run shake the stones, which strike the surface of the matrix.
Back in the studio, the box is opened and the matrix is extracted from the stones. The data of each run (location, date, duration, and distance) are noted on the reverse side. The matrix is then entrusted to the printmaker, who inks it and prints six copies on paper. Each print is finally numbered and signed by the artist.
